What ADESA Is and How It Works
ADESA operates 70+ physical auction locations across North America, plus a full digital auction platform. It is one of the largest wholesale used vehicle marketplaces — and like Manheim, it is built for licensed dealers. But the dealer-only label is a business rule, not a technical impossibility.
ADESA handles:
- Off-lease vehicles from major lenders
- Fleet and rental disposals
- Dealer trade-ins
- Repo vehicles from banks and credit unions
ADESA's March 2026 market data shows strong conversion rates and firm wholesale pricing across most segments — especially late-model SUVs and light trucks. The platform moves high-quality inventory that eventually lands on retail lots at significant markups.
The Two Legal Paths for Individuals
Path 1: Wholesale Co-op membership
FlipLane provides individual members access to ADESA's digital inventory through a co-op structure. Members browse the full ADESA run list, place bids, and purchase at wholesale — no dealer license, no broker fee. The co-op handles the licensing. You get the price.
Path 2: Licensed broker
A licensed dealer or broker will bid at ADESA on your behalf using their AuctionAccess credentials. You pay: wholesale auction price + broker fee ($250–$500 per vehicle) + transportation to your location. Effective cost: still 15–30% below retail on most vehicles.
What ADESA Charges Dealers (And Why You Should Know)
ADESA charges buyers a percentage-based auction fee on top of the hammer price. This is typically 3–5% of the purchase price, added at settlement. Dealers factor this into their margin calculations — which is why they bid strategically and buy only when the math works.
For you, this means: when you buy through a co-op, the auction fee is visible and predictable. It is already baked into the total cost comparison to retail pricing.
How to Bid at ADESA as a First-Time Buyer
If buying through FlipLane:
- Browse the ADESA run list online (current inventory with condition reports, photos, and pricing data)
