Why Manheim Is Dealer-Only
Manheim is a wholesale marketplace. It is designed for dealers to buy inventory at market-clearing prices, then retail those vehicles to consumers like you. The dealer-only structure keeps consumer buyers out of the bidding pool — which protects dealer margins.
This is the same model used by ADESA, ACV Auctions, and virtually every major wholesale platform in North America. It is not a security feature. It is a business model.
The public can attend select Manheim public auctions at certain locations, but these are different sales events with different inventory, lower volume, and no guaranteed access to the same quality of vehicles that flow through the dealer lanes.
Your Three Options for Accessing Manheim Without a License
Option 1: Join a wholesale co-op (recommended)
Co-ops like FlipLane hold dealer credentials and make auction access available to members. You browse Manheim's full inventory — including dealer-only lanes — bid through the co-op's licensed account, and pay wholesale price. The co-op handles all licensing and compliance. You get the price. No dealer license required.
Option 2: Use a broker
Third-party brokers bid at auction on your behalf using their dealer license. Typical fees: $250–$500 per transaction. You still pay wholesale (plus the broker's fee). This works for one-off purchases but becomes expensive if you are buying multiple vehicles or want ongoing access.
Option 3: Get a wholesale-only dealer license
Some states allow wholesale-only dealer licenses with minimal physical requirements (office space, signage). Total cost: $1,000–$5,000 depending on state. Requires pre-licensing education, a surety bond ($5,000–$15,000), and business registration. Only makes sense if you plan to buy 5+ vehicles per year.
What Happens If You Try to Attend Without a License
Manheim and ADESA verify dealer credentials through AuctionAccess at entry. Non-dealers cannot register, bid, or enter dealer-only lanes. The process is not negotiable.
There are no exceptions. Any website or "guru" promising "guaranteed Manheim access without a license" via gray-market license-sharing is describing something that violates auction house terms of service and can result in license revocation for the dealer whose credentials are misused.
The legitimate paths are clear: co-op membership, broker services, or your own license.
